2006 - 2007
In Cinemuse's second full year,
the club expanded in several ways. The club included Cinemuse T-shirts
in membership dues and launched a fully-operational website in August.
In addition to regular Monday screenings, Cinemuse made several Sunday
trips to Staunton's Visulite Cinemas.
Cinemuse Productions
Cinemuse introduced Thursday Productions meetings to produce short
films and other video projects. The club wrote and produced three
shorts in a triptych, along with four shorter pieces made for a spring
exercise.
Guest Speaker Ryan Gray
JMU alumn Ryan Gray spoke to Cinemuse
homecoming week. The graduate discussed what it is like working for New
Line in L.A. and his role in the filmmaking process. He answered
questions for an audience of both members and staff.
Virginia Film Festival
In late October Cinemuse traveled to Virginia’s 19th Annual Film
Festival, “Revelations: Finding God at the Movies,” in Charlottesville.
As a club we attended screenings often followed by guest speakers
(including Morgan Freedman, Robert Duvall and Liev Schrieber).
Convocation Clean up
Fundraiser
The Spring '07 fundraiser was a success, as
Cinemuse members cleaned the Convocation Center after a high school
basketball game. Cinemuse thanks everyone who came out to support the
club (and celebrate with IHOP afterwards).
"Dreamfest" Film Festival
While the 2007 film festival was Cinemuse's second annual festival, it
was the first to occur in one weekend. With the theme of dreams, the
festival was held at the Grafton Stovall Theatre and all five
screenings were completely free to the public. On Saturday, February 3,
and Sunday, February 4, we brought five classic, foreign and
contemporary films back to the big screen, including: Brazil,
Spellbound, The
Science
of
Sleep, Dreams
and Spirited
Away.
IVS Film Series
The Institute of Visual Studies (IVS)
co-sponsored
a
film series with SMAD and Cinemuse throughout the spring
semester. The program included six films screened every other Thursday
evening in Harrison or Duke Halls. The series focused specifically on
the visual elements of cinema, ehanced with occassional guest speakers.
The lineup included Me You
& Everyone We Know, The Last
Picture Show with graduate photographer Paul Estabrook, The Player
with SMAD professor Kevin Reynolds, Koyaanisqatsi
and Spring Summer Fall Winter Spring with
professor of Buddhism Sally King.
Student Film Festival
UPB's Student Film Festival was Sunday,
March 25th, at Grafton Stovall Theatre. Cinemuse was represented as
three shorts were selected for exhibition including: Cinemuse
Productions' Cinema
Interuptus, Jen Bishop's Onna
No
Onaka and Ben Nicholson's 23,
which
won
festival awards for best direction and cinematography.
Movie Date Auction
Fundraiser
In addition to the convocation clean up
fundraiser, Cinemuse raised money with a "Man Auction" on Monday, April
2nd. The house was full as 11 club members volunteered themselves on
the auction block. The event brought its audience entertainment with
bachelor introductions, questions and finally, the auction. All members
were sold with the promise of accompanying their dates to a Grafton
movie of the buyer's choice (with Cinemuse paying for the tickets).
End of the Year "Bon
Voyage" Party
On Friday, April 27th, the Wills hosted a end of the year party at
member Will Fawley's house. All Cinemuse members were invited to the
nautical-themed costume party, as we celebrated the year and wished off
graduating members Morgan DeHaven, Mac Johnson and Ben Nicholson.
